Five Guidelines to Finally Make Math Work for You

Guideline 1 – Don’t Memorize Rules. Go Deeper. Understand the Soul of Math.

Most students are taught to follow steps. But steps without understanding are fragile.

Don’t ask how to do it—ask why it works. The soul of math isn’t in rules. It’s in meaning.
Start there.

Guideline 2 – Invent and Name Your Own Math.

When you notice a pattern, don’t wait for permission. Create your own method. Name it. Own it.

In my class, we have “Luca’s Rule,” “Mary’s Move,” and the legendary “Division with the Alien.”
They weren’t in the textbook—but they worked. That’s what matters.

If it’s valid and it gets you there, it deserves a name.
Math is a living language. You’re allowed to speak it your way.

Guideline 3 – Speak Your Own Language First. Learn Formal Math Later.

Don’t start with the polished words. Start with what makes sense to you.

Draw it. Describe it. Explain it your way. Let it become clear before it becomes official.

In my class, ∀x ∈ ℝ became “Axer.” ∄x ∈ ℝ became “Exer.” And suddenly… logic made sense.

Understanding first. Notation second.

Guideline 4 – Test Your Understanding in Action.

Thinking you know something is not the same as using it. That’s why we practice.

Exercises aren’t punishment. They’re mirrors.
They reflect where your strategies shine—and where they need adjusting.

Try. Observe. Learn through doing. That’s how you grow.

Guideline 5 – Change the Voice. Find the Joy.

When you’re stuck, your inner voice will speak.

If it says, “This is too hard,” your brain will freeze.
But if it says, “This puzzle has a key—and I’ll find it,” you’ll move forward.

I tell my students: “Let me be wrong my way.” “The exercise doesn’t win—I do.”

Math is serious, but it’s also play.
Laugh when it goes wrong. Celebrate when it goes right.
Let joy be your method—not just your reward.


These are not rules. They’re not formulas.
They are invitations.

To learn math with freedom.
To make meaning before memory.
To find a voice that finally says:
“This makes sense to me.”

You don’t have to work for math.
It’s time math started working for you.
